Presence Film
The acclaimed director pushes his creative boundaries in this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely from the viewpoint of a ghost. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their fresh home, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. The daughter appears conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems protective of her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
This Self-Referential Film
Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He portrays an egotistical Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to attend a festive event in Mallorca for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, prime time, the Channel 4 network
This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the youth on edge. When Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. The actor plays the greedy Jim, who declares at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye begin profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, yet Chastain manages to present the character with compassion. October 14th, late night, on Film4
